As of August 25th 2021, three of the five biggest QB competitions have been finalized when the Denver Broncos named Teddy Bridgewater as their starting QB over Drew Lock, when the Jacksonville Jaguars named Trevor Lawrence, the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, as their starting QB over Gardner Minshew, and when the NEW ORLEANS SAINTS named Jameis Winston their starting Qb over Taysom Hill.
The other two biggest QB controversies involved the New England Patriots decision between Cam Newton and their 1st round draft pick out of Alabama, Mac Jones and the 49ers competition between QBs Jimmy Garappolo and 1st round 3rd overall pick from North Dakota State, Trey Lance.
We should get an answer soon, but reports have Mac Jones winning the role for the Patriots and Jimmy G for the 49ers.
It looks like Cam's status of being unvaccinated and a "missunderstanding" about the testing and Covid protocols are the main reason behind why it's possible he might not be named the starter week 1 for the Patriots (Washington Post).
As for the Saints, Jameis Winston has definitely come a long way from what he was with the Buccaneers. From what I've heard, he certainly earned the role and the respect from his teammates.
However, just because he was named as the starter don't expect Head Coach Sean Payton not to utilize their Swiss Army knife guy (Taysom Hill). If anything look for Hill to have more playing time this season, especially with no Drew Brees under center.
Other news around QBs to keep in mind:
"Justin Fields to start Bears Final Preseason Game; Andy Dalton to start Week 1" (Bleacher Report).
"Frank Reich: Carson Wentz's foot 'all positive' after three days of practice" (NBC Sports).
"Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow to make preseason debut, eight months after knee surgery" (ESPN).
