Key Terms You Should Know Before You Draft

League Commissioner-The League Commissioner is essentially the creator of your league. That means this is the person who set up the rules, regulations, and other things involving your fantasy football league before the season started. This person holds the key to everything that is involved in your fantasy football league and is the person who allowed you to play in their league. So, if things in your league need to be dealt with, this is the person you talk to first.

League Type- League type has to do with how you draft, the number of players/owners in your league, and the scoring format you use by during the season. Leagues can be customized to whichever format you desire. All of this is controlled by your league commissioner To join a league you can either be invited by a friend, you could go to fantasy football websites and make start your own, or you could join a random one held by any of the Fantasy host sites (ESPN.com, Yahoo, NFL.com, CBS, etc).

Snake Draft- This is a draft where the first person picks in the numeral order (1,2,3,4…) then when the last person picks, the last person picks again and the order goes in the opposite direction (…4,3,2,1). For instance, if there were only 4 teams in a league, the order of who picks would go team 1, team 2, team 3, team 4, team 4, team 3, team 2, team 1, team 1, team 2… and so on. This continues like so until the very last round of the draft or really until every team in the league has their starting and bench rosters filled.

Auction Draft- This type of draft involves buying players with fake money. Typically, you start off with $200 of fake money. Each player is set at a minimum bid. Each player goes to the highest bidder. Once your $200 is gone you can’t buy any more players. So the key is to not overspend on your first four players. After that you just need to spend your money wisely on guys you still need in your line-up.

PPR Leagues- PPR stands for Points Per Reception. Every time a player catches a pass they receive some numerical value of points. Typically, this means there would be 1 point or in some league ½ a point for each reception, but this all depends on what your league format says and is put in by your commissioner. These points are added to the players final score. The players that are most affected by this are the running-backs, wide receivers, and tight-ends. Quarterbacks and kickers could apply, but it is very unlikely that they will ever catch a pass in their entire professional football career. Defenses are the only ‘players’ that can never be affected by this category of scoring.

Standard Leagues- In standard leagues there are no points for each reception made by a player. Standard leagues have all scoring done by the players based on their statistics in yardage and in touch downs.

Waiver Wire- The waiver wire is essentially a list of all players that are not currently on anyone’s roster from your fantasy league and it is the place where you can add players you want/ need on your team (at the expense of dropping a player on your team of your choosing who you don't need anymore).

Position Abreviation Key:

WR = Wide Receiver

TE = Tight End

D/ST = Defense/ Special Teams
